ABSTRACT

È conoscenza ormai consolidata come i neonati, sani e a termine, posti skin-to-skin sul grembo materno, presentino un’innata e istintiva abilità nel dirigersi verso l’areola del seno della propria mamma. Sono stati identificati 20 riflessi primordiali che vengono utilizzati dai neonati per cercare e attaccarsi al seno, per succhiare il latte e per nutrirsi. Non solo i bambini sanno istintivamente come alimentarsi, grazie alla presenza dei riflessi neonatali, ma anche le madri attivano altrettanto istintivamente i riflessi giusti e al momento giusto, toccando il bambino e interagendo.

Se allattare è un istinto naturale, sia per la madre come per il neonato, come mai tante mamme hanno problemi nell'allattare i loro bambini? Sicuramente anche perchè l’allattamento non viene visto più come un atto naturale: letture, consigli, spiegazioni, finiscono per confondere e le madri non si fidano più del loro istinto e della competenza del proprio bambino.

It is common knowledge that babies placed skin-to-skin on the womb, healthy and full-term, have an innate and intuitive ability to travel towards the areola of their mother's breast. Infants employ 20 primitive reflexes to seek and latch on to the breast, nurse, and feed. Because of the presence of neonatal reflexes, not only do babies automatically know how to feed themselves, but mothers also instinctively activate the right reflexes at the right time while touching and interacting with their babies.
Why do so many moms have difficulty breastfeeding their newborns since breastfeeding is a natural reflex for both the mother and the newborn? Surely also because breastfeeding is no longer seen as a natural act: readings, advice, explanations end up confusing and mothers no longer trust their instincts and the competence of their baby.
